Isn’t it so easy to focus on the worst possible outcome of a situation? This of course, causes heightened fear and anxiety. I mean, who wouldn’t feel anxious about the worst case scenario? You may be having thoughts of “what if I fail”, “what if I look stupid”, “what if people don’t like me” and the list goes on. We all have these thoughts and they are completely normal, but they just aren’t that helpful. When we get stuck focusing on the worst possible outcome, it causes our fear and anxiety to spiral out of control. It also tends to drain us of energy and make us feel powerless. This thinking can keep us from trying new things or taking risks which may mean missing out on some really great opportunities.
One of the most helpful things to do when stuck in the worst case scenario thinking, is to ask yourself what else is possible? Allowing yourself to recognize that there are other possible outcomes can help to de-escalate the anxiety and create more balanced thinking. Considering other possibilities, causes us to feel more hopeful and a sense of empowerment. A helpful way to do this can be to write down the worst case scenario you are worried about, and then brainstorm other possible outcomes.
Sometimes, when we are really stuck in the negative thinking, it may be challenging to come up with alternative outcomes on our own. It can be helpful to do this exercise with a trusted friend or family member.
