Taking risks and stepping outside of our comfort zone is difficult. When we do take a risk or try something new it can feel uncomfortable because it is unfamiliar. The key is growth happens when we are feeling uncomfortable and trying something different. I had this experience myself recently! I had been wondering about how to continue to grow my business and looking at different options for advertising. A recommendation was to try the local paper to run an ad.
I found myself feeling uncomfortable at this initially and coming up with excuses to not pursue this option with thoughts like “who reads the paper anymore?” After reflecting on this feeling further, I realized that I was afraid of being seen or noticed by others and potential judgment that might come my way. I had to remind myself that other people’s judgments are not about me and are projections of their own beliefs and experiences.
I took a step out of my comfort zone and reached out to the local paper for advertising, and it led to an opportunity to do an interview with a reporter about my business. This experience was another lesson for me that although taking risks can feel scary there often is an opportunity or reward that comes from that risk. If I stayed in my comfort zone, I would have missed an opportunity to bring more awareness to the community about my business.
