Be Who You Needed When You Were Younger

Writer: brittanyhillbrittanyhill

May brings Mental Health Awareness Month! I have spent this past year especially focused on supporting children, youth and families. I’m often asked by parents, adults, kids and youth how they can support their mental health. Here are some tips below I’ve learned through my training and experience:

1. Check In: kids and youth may not always want to talk about worries or other feelings. That’s ok, using empathy and non-judgmental listening helps them know they can talk about anything on their minds.

2. Provide Hope: One of the most important things you can do is hold hope for a child or teen experiencing a tough time. Empathize with their struggles and help them know they matter and are loved.

3. Consistent Routine: Having consistency in the school day or week with waking up, going to bed and doing tasks throughout the day can provide stability.

4. Offer Help: Offering practical help, for example, help with homework can provide an added sense of feeling supported and prepared. This can help kids and youth to feel more confident and secure.

Be who you needed when you were younger! Support kids and youth through providing a listening ear, hope, consistency and practical help. If you are interested in learning more, please connect with me for support!
